The Murder of Katelyn Markham

On August 14, 2011, 21-year-old Katelyn Markham was reported missing by her fiancĂ©, John Carter. He had last seen her the night before when he left her home around 11 pm.

Katelyn was about to graduate from the Art Institute of Cincinnati and lived in nearby Fairfield. She was working two jobs to support herself while in school. She had been with John for six years although they had only been engaged for around a year at the time she disappeared. They had made plans to move to Colorado to start their life after she graduated.

The Events of August 12-13, 2011

Despite being exhausted, John persuaded Katelyn to attend the Sacred Heart Church festival. This was an event they attended every year. While at the festival, it has been reported that the two had an argument. This disagreement led to Katelyn leaving the festival early.

The following day proceeded as normal. After she got off work, Josh came over to the house to hang out. A male friend stopped by but noticed a tension in the room. Katelyn was not in a good mood it seemed and John was talking for the both of them. Due to the tension in the home, he left around 9 pm. John states that he left the house anywhere from 11 pm to 12 am. The reports he has given regarding this conflict as to the approximate time.

Reporting Katelyn Missing

The following day, John called Katelyn's father, David Markham, very concerned that he had not been able to reach her that day. John called 911 and during that call told the dispatcher that they had not had an argument recently. He and David met police at her home but she was not there. Her car, purse and other personal items were all at the home except her cell phone.

Over the next few days and weeks, multiple searches were conducted. However, they were unable to find any sign of Katelyn Markham.

Curiously, within just a few days of her disappearance, John Carter was referring to her in the past tense. He has also stated that he took a voice stress test although the police department has never confirmed this.

Finding Katelyn

In April 2013, some scrappers were going through a local dumpsite along a creek and discovered skeletal remains. This site was in between Fairfield, Ohio where Katelyn lived and a property owned by John's family in Laurel, Indiana. Eventually, the remains were confirmed to be Katelyn using dental records. The medical examiner ruled the manner of death as a homicide but couldn't rule as to the cause of death.

In 2016, David Markham had requested that the case be turned over to a different agency. In the hopes of adding a fresh look at the investigation. In addition to this, in 2014, a private investigator took on the case as well. Mr. Markham hired the private investigator as he felt that Fairfield PD made mistakes from the beginning.

As of 2020, no need leads have surfaced although there has been speculation that Katelyn's case may be tied to the murder of Ellie Weik. However, there has been no proof that this.
